34-year-old football player based in Ogun State, identified as Sodiq Adebisi, has been confirmed dead after collapsing during a training session at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode.
It was learnt that the deceased player was training with other football players on Saturday when the incident occurred.
When his teammates saw he collapsed to the ground, they rushed him to a state hospital in Ijebu-Ode.
However, despite efforts by hospital professionals, he was pronounced dead the same day he was taken to the hospital.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, on Tuesday confirmed the occurrence and revealed that the deceased’s brother, Ganiyu Adebisi, had approached the Igbeba Police Division to demand the corpse for burial.
“The brother came to report the incident at our Igbeba division. The family said they don’t want any investigation and that they wanted to bury the deceased according to Islamic rite,” Odutola was quoted by Daily Post.
A similar incident had occurred in March 20202 when 23-year-old Chineme, one of Nigerian Premier Football League’s most talented players, collapsed and died while playing for Nasarawa United in a match against Katsina United in March, 2020.
The player was attended to by medics of the two clubs and was later rushed to Dalhatu- Araf specialist hospital where he was pronounced dead.
