Breaking News: Another GAC Member, Chief Muraina Taiwo Faults Obasa’s Removal, Seeks Tinubu’s Intervention

The controversy surrounding the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly has deepened, as another member of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Muraina Taiwo, has questioned the legitimacy of the process.

Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, after a majority of lawmakers voted against him, citing allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and financial misappropriation. He was replaced by former deputy speaker, Mojisola Meranda.

At the time of his removal, Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency 1, was in the United States. Upon his return to Lagos on Saturday, he strongly denied the corruption allegations and insisted that due process was not followed in his removal.

“My status in the House? I strongly believe I am still the speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way and I will not contest it,” Obasa told supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge, GRA Ikeja, on Saturday.

Chief Muraina Taiwo joined other party leaders in expressing concern over the handling of Obasa’s removal. He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and resolve the crisis, warning that the situation could create further divisions within the party.

Despite the ongoing controversy, the Lagos State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its decision, standing by the newly appointed Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, and upholding Obasa’s impeachment.
