Ede/Egbedi Communal Clash: Chairman Egbedore LG calls for Calm, Visit Elegbedi of Egbedi
A communal clash has erupted between Ede and Egbedi in Egbedore Local Government Area, Osun State, over a land dispute. The conflict took a violent turn when some political thugs from Ede, led by Oriade Kazeem, an SSA to Governor Ademola Adeleke, invaded Egbedi town, armed with guns and ammunition, and began shooting indiscriminately. This senseless act of violence has left several residents of Egbedi with serious injuries, and they are currently receiving medical attention in the hospital.
Kabiyesi Elegbedi of Egbedi, Oba Azeez Muideen Abioye (Ajagungbade 1), the traditional ruler of the community, has condemned the attack, stating that this is not the first time Ede has invaded his town. He lamented that Ede has consistently disturbed the peace in his community, despite the ongoing court case, and continues to take the law into their own hands. The monarch further alleged that Ede people have made several attempts on his life.
In response to the crisis, Alhaji (Hon) Issa Akinwale, Chairman of Egbedore Local Government, has called for calm and visited Kabiyesi Elegbedi of Egbedi to show solidarity. Hon Akinwale sympathized with the monarch and the entire Egbedi community, cautioning the invaders to stop taking the law into their own hands. He urged them to wait for the outcome of the court case instead of resorting to violence.
The chairman also appealed to Senator Ademola Adeleke, the Governor of Osun State, to intervene in the crisis and protect the lives of innocent people in Egbedi land. He also urged the governor to take proactive steps to prevent further escalation of the conflict and ensure the safety of all residents in the affected areas.
The land dispute has been a longstanding concern in the area. It is essential for both communities to find a peaceful resolution, rather than resorting to violence. The court case should be allowed to run its course, and the rule of law should be respected.
