Breaking News: Lagos State to Host Africa’s First Electric Boat Race in October – Sanwo-Olu Says Global Spotlight Now on Nigeria’s Aquatic Splendour

Lagos State is set to make history as it prepares to host Africa’s first-ever E1 Racing Championship, a world-class water-motorsport event, this October. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the groundbreaking development following a high-level visit to Monaco, where he attended the globally renowned E1 Championship alongside senior government officials.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the trip as “a good reminder of how innovation, determination, and bold ideas can come together to create something truly groundbreaking.”

The championship is scheduled for October 4th and 5th, 2025, making Lagos the first African city to stage the prestigious clean-energy marine sports event.

“This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special — our culture, our energy, and our people,” the governor wrote. “It’s a chance to welcome visitors, share our stories, and highlight the incredible potential of our city.”

He also expressed appreciation to Afreximbank for supporting the initiative, praising their investment in Team Drogba and belief in Lagos’s vision for sustainability and innovation in marine transportation.

Joining him in Monaco was the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, who praised the governor's visionary leadership and commitment to positioning Lagos as a hub for sports innovation.

“Lagos in Monaco: Governor Sanwo-Olu leads the way as Lagos State sets to activate water-motorsports in Nigeria’s State of Aquatic Splendour,” Fatodu said.

With the E1 Championship coming to the waters of Lagos, the city is poised to boost tourism, drive environmental awareness, and place itself firmly on the map of global sports innovation.
