Breaking News: FG Hikes Nigerian Passport Fees to ₦100,000 and ₦200,000 Effective September 1
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a fresh increase in the cost of obtaining Nigerian passports, with new rates set to take effect from September 1, 2025.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, disclosed that the review applies strictly to applications made within Nigeria.
Under the new fee structure, a 32-page passport with a five-year validity will now cost ₦100,000, while a 64-page passport with a ten-year validity will go for ₦200,000.
However, passport fees for Nigerians in the diaspora remain unchanged. Applicants abroad will continue to pay $150 for the 32-page, five-year booklet and $230 for the 64-page, 10-year booklet.
According to the NIS, the adjustment is aimed at “maintaining the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport, while ensuring accessibility for citizens.”
This development comes barely a year after a similar hike. In August 2024, the Federal Government raised passport fees from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000 for the 32-page booklet and from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000 for the 64-page, 10-year passport.
The latest increment has already sparked concerns among Nigerians, many of whom see it as an added financial burden amidst rising living costs.
