Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized the Federal Government over the recent hike in the cost of Nigeria’s international passport, describing it as unjust and burdensome on struggling citizens.
The new fees set by the government now peg the 32-page passport booklet at ₦100,000 and the 64-page version at ₦200,000, marking the third increase in just two years.
Reacting to the development, Obi condemned the policy, stressing that it further exposes what he termed the administration’s “disconnect with the people and their suffering.”
“The obsession of this administration with putting a burden on the populace is becoming legendary and continues to reveal its apparent disconnect with the people and their suffering,” Obi said.
He pointed out that with Nigeria’s newly approved minimum wage of ₦70,000, the cost of obtaining a single passport now surpasses a worker’s monthly salary.
“In what other country do you see a situation where the price of an international passport is higher than what workers earn in a month?” Obi queried.
The hike has already sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians questioning the rationale behind the steep increase at a time when citizens are grappling with rising inflation and economic hardship.
