Panic in Orile-Iganmu as Residents Raise Alarm Over Weak Building on Savage Street as Landlord Adds Another Floor on Already Fragile Structure
Tension is mounting in the Orile-Iganmu area of Lagos as residents have raised alarm over another building allegedly on the brink of collapse on Savage Street.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke with Lagos Reporters, the two-storey structure, already visibly weakened, is currently undergoing renovation. Shockingly, workers are said to be adding another floor turning it into a three-storey building despite clear signs of structural instability.
Residents revealed that the building had previously been marked for demolition by Lagos State authorities, but the landlord reportedly halted the process under unclear circumstances.
“We are living in fear. The building was already weak and marked for demolition, yet they’ve started adding another floor. We don’t know how the landlord managed to stop the demolition,” a resident lamented.
Concerned residents are now appealing to the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and other relevant authorities to intervene immediately and pull down the structure before another tragedy occurs.
Their fears come just four days after a marked building collapsed on Coates Street, Oyingbo, trapping several occupants and leaving many injured.
Residents warned that failure to act swiftly could lead to another preventable disaster, urging Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to intensify monitoring and enforcement of safety standards across high-risk buildings in the state.
