Insecurity: Nigerians Free to Seek International Assistance if Government Fails — Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said Nigerians are at liberty to seek help from the international community if the Nigerian government fails in its responsibility to protect them from worsening insecurity.
Obasanjo made the remark while responding to questions at an event in Jos, where he expressed concern over persistent killings, kidnappings and violent attacks across the country. He said no citizen should feel guilty turning to foreign partners when their safety can no longer be guaranteed at home.
According to the former President, security challenges have escalated to a point where decisive, innovative and collaborative action is urgently required. He argued that the protection of lives is a fundamental duty of government, adding that when that duty is not fully met, citizens are justified in exploring other avenues for survival and safety.
Obasanjo further emphasised the need for Nigeria to adopt modern security technology, including advanced surveillance tools, to track and deter criminal elements. He maintained that criminals should not be able to hide or operate freely in an era where digital tools can aid intelligence gathering.
He also urged Nigerians to continue praying for the nation’s leaders, noting that wisdom and courage are needed to restore peace and stability. Obasanjo stressed that safeguarding the lives and dignity of Nigerians must remain the priority of every administration.
His comments come at a time when communities in several parts of the country continue to grapple with recurring attacks, raising fresh debates about government accountability and the limits of citizen endurance.
