NRC Boss Opeifa Warns: Electric Rail Lines Pose Fatal Risks for Vandals, Trespassers
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has issued a strong warning to vandals and trespassers to keep off railway tracks as Nigeria transitions to electric rail lines.
Opeifa, who spoke during an interview on The Exchange Podcast with Femi Soneye, said the ongoing electrification of rail tracks marks a significant leap in modernising the country’s rail system but comes with heightened safety risks.
He emphasised that while electric rail technology is faster, safer, and more environmentally friendly, it is dangerous for anyone who tampers with the new infrastructure.
“Electric rail is safer, faster, and more environmentally friendly, but it comes with inherent risks for those who tamper with the lines,” he said.
According to him, vandals who attempt to cut or interfere with the upgraded tracks face the risk of severe injury or death due to electrocution.
Opeifa also revealed that the NRC has boosted security around rail assets through enhanced surveillance systems, dedicated monitoring teams, and intensified public sensitisation efforts.
“NRC is investing heavily in security, surveillance, and public awareness campaigns to safeguard both the infrastructure and communities around the tracks,” he noted.
He urged residents, especially those living close to rail corridors, to avoid entering restricted zones and to promptly report any suspicious activity.
Describing the new rail system as a crucial national investment, Opeifa stressed the need for collective responsibility in protecting it.
“Modern rail lines are national assets. Protecting them is not optional,” he said.
He further explained that the electrification project is part of broader reforms aimed at improving passenger services, expanding freight operations, and increasing private sector participation in the nation’s rail sector.
