OBASANJO, FAYOSE TRADE WORDS AS ‘THANK YOU’ MESSAGE TURNS SOUR
The exchange became public on Monday after Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, released details of an SMS Fayose sent to the former president following Obasanjo’s attendance at his birthday celebration.
In the strongly worded message, Fayose thanked Obasanjo for honouring his invitation but accused him of making “irresponsible comments” during the event. He went further to launch a personal attack on the former president, saying he refrained from responding at the venue “so that the world will know the difference between a sane and a mad man.”
Fayose also alleged that Obasanjo was exhibiting “heightened dementia” and demanded the return of a financial contribution, claiming Obasanjo had publicly admitted receiving the money “but Dangote brought you back.”
Part of Fayose’s message reads:
“Your coming to my birthday party, I appreciate except for your very irresponsible comments at your age… It is also obvious that you have also lost your sanity… I shall set the records straight in due course… I shall appreciate if you return my money.”
Obasanjo, in a brief but pointed response, dismissed the outburst and described the message as a reflection of Fayose’s character.
His reply read:
“Thanks for your ‘Thank You’ message which undisguisedly revealed who and what you are, unchanged and unchangeable. Your money has been sent back through Foluso Adeagbo who brought it, in the same bag as he brought it unopened by me.”
The sharp exchange has triggered widespread reactions across political circles, given the long, sometimes turbulent history between both men.
Kehinde Akinyemi confirmed that the correspondence was released with the approval of the former president.
