Prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and UK based lawyer who's also a gubernatorial hopeful of the PDP in 2027, Bar. Mogaji Niyi Aborisade, the Mogaji of Ajagba compound, Oke Offa Babasale, ibadan has raised fresh concerns over the deepening internal crisis within the opposition party, warning that Nigeria’s political landscape may soon be left without a credible counterbalance if the PDP continues on its current trajectory.
Aborisade noted that the wave of suspensions, parallel leadership structures, and ongoing defections are clear indications that the party is battling its worst internal turmoil since inception.
“There is a serious problem within our party. We cannot pretend that all is well when all is not well. The crisis has been brewing for some time but has now fermented,” he said.
He frowned at the rising influence of actors pursuing personal political survival at the expense of party stability, saying infiltration is evident.
“Our party has been infiltrated. The hand indeed is the hand of Esau but the voice is that of Jacob. You can imagine how many serving governors, senators and House of Rep members have decamped to APC. This is telling us something. Why should serving governors decamp and still feel secure?” he queried.
Aborisade pointed to the political confrontation in Rivers State involving the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and Governor Siminalayi Fubara as a prime example of how power tussles can threaten the collective interest of the PDP if not decisively addressed by the national leadership.
Calls for Lasting Solutions
Aborisade emphasized that this is not a time for blame games or ego politics, but a defining moment to renew internal democracy and reinstall discipline:
“We must bring back respect for party structures and institutions. Decisions must no longer be taken by a few individuals. A strengthened internal conflict resolution system is urgently needed.”
He also urged PDP leadership to embark on genuine reconciliation, saying the party must reward commitment rather than betray loyalty:
“Those who have stood by the party in hard times must not be sidelined. We must rebuild trust. Healing is needed before any talk of reclaiming power.”
Despite the storm, Aborisade remained optimistic that the PDP can recover and reposition itself to challenge the ruling APC ahead of 2027.
“This is a critical stage where we cannot afford prolonged internal wranglings. We must come together to defeat our enemy. I still believe we shall overcome the current problems and resolve the internal power struggle.”
He added that the APC would soon face its own political reckoning:
“When lie is running away for 20 years, one day the truth would catch up with it. Nemesis will soon catch up with APC and PDP will rise again,” he concluded confidently.
Aborisade urged party stakeholders nationwide to close ranks now or risk watching the opposition completely collapse.
