Tinubu Orders Fast-Track Vetting of Ambassadors Amid Trump Tensions Over Nigeria
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Nigeria’s security agencies to expedite the vetting of ambassadorial nominees ahead of formal announcements expected next week, in what officials describe as a major step toward restoring Nigeria’s full diplomatic representation abroad.
The directive follows the 2023 recall of all Nigerian ambassadors a decision that left several foreign missions understaffed and weakened the country’s diplomatic presence in key international capitals.
According to senior government sources, the fast-tracked process is part of a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s foreign missions and enhance global engagement amid increasing international scrutiny.
The move comes in the wake of renewed tensions following U.S. President Donald Trump’s redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over alleged religious persecution, coupled with his recent remarks hinting at possible U.S. military involvement against Islamist militants in the region.
While acknowledging ongoing U.S. cooperation in counterterrorism operations, the Nigerian Presidency has reiterated that the nation’s sovereignty and internal security policies remain “non-negotiable.”
Officials familiar with the matter said the new ambassadorial appointments would help reinforce Nigeria’s diplomatic ties with major partners, including the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and other key allies.
Tinubu’s latest directive, delivered as part of his 2025 Independence Day message, reflects his administration’s push to recalibrate Nigeria’s foreign policy blending assertive diplomacy with renewed international cooperation at a time of global and domestic challenges.
