Christmas: Oyo NUJ Applauds Journalists’ Sacrifice, Calls for Stronger Support for Media
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has sent goodwill messages to journalists, media professionals, stakeholders and residents of the state as Christians celebrate Christmas, lauding the resilience and commitment of its members despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.
In its Christmas message, the Council described the season as one that underscores love, sacrifice, peace and hope, values it said align closely with the ethics and responsibilities of the journalism profession.
The union urged journalists to use the festive period as a moment of reflection on their role as the Fourth Estate of the Realm, emphasizing the need for sustained professionalism, truth, fairness and accountability in news gathering and dissemination. It added that the media must continue to play a unifying role by promoting peace and harmonious coexistence in society.
Commending journalists in Oyo State, the NUJ acknowledged their dedication and courage in the line of duty, noting that they have continued to inform and educate the public in spite of economic difficulties. The Council described their sacrifices as commendable and reassured members of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding their welfare and professional rights.
The Oyo NUJ also appealed to governments, corporate bodies and public-spirited individuals to invest more in the media sector, particularly through capacity development, improved working conditions and enhanced safety for journalists. According to the Council, a vibrant and responsible press is indispensable to democratic governance and sustainable development.
As the Christmas celebration unfolds, the union expressed prayers for peace, renewed hope and prosperity in every home, while expressing optimism that the new year would bring greater progress for the union, the journalism profession and Oyo State as a whole.
