Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has officially defected to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC). The announcement was made on Tuesday at Nike Lake Resort, Enugu, where Obi described the move as the start of a “rescue journey” ahead of the 2026 political calendar and the 2027 general election.
Obi said the new alignment aims to challenge entrenched political interests and resist electoral malpractice “by every lawful means” in 2027. Supporters from the Obidient movement and allied political figures attended the event, endorsing the decision and signaling a broader realignment of opposition forces around the ADC platform.
Enugu was chosen for its symbolic significance as a hub in the South-East, highlighting the region’s role in national politics. The ADC, already backed by notable opposition leaders, has seen increased membership and political activity ahead of the 2027 elections.

Many supporters have welcomed the move, while Labour Party Governor Alex Otti of Abia State confirmed that Obi informed him of his exit but said he would remain in the LP.
