Pressure Mounts on Kwankwaso, Gov Yusuf to Join APC as Kano Stakeholders Speak Out
Stakeholders and residents of Kano State have reportedly reached a consensus urging the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The call was made public by the Director-General, Protocol at the Kano State Government House, Abdullahi Rogo, who claimed that the people of the state have agreed that both political leaders should align with the APC in the interest of Kano’s political future.
Rogo made the assertion in a statement that has since gained traction on social media, where he noted that consultations had been held with critical stakeholders, including lawmakers and members of the Kwankwasiyya political movement.
According to him, the growing influence of the APC at the national level and recent political realignments in Kano make the ruling party a more strategic platform for sustaining governance and political relevance in the state.
He said the move would strengthen Kano’s position within the federal political structure and ensure continued development under the present administration.
However, as of the time of filing this report, neither Senator Kwankwaso nor Governor Yusuf has officially confirmed plans to defect from the NNPP to the APC.
The development comes amid heightened political activities and speculations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several NNPP members in Kano recently defecting to the APC.
Governor Yusuf, who emerged victorious under the NNPP platform in the 2023 governorship election, has maintained silence over the reported pressure, while Kwankwaso has previously dismissed rumours of an imminent defection, insisting that any major political decision would follow broad consultations.
Political observers believe the latest call reflects the intense struggle for control of Kano’s political structure, a state widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential electoral blocs.
