2027: CRISIS HITS ENUGU ADC AS STAKEHOLDERS BATTLE NWODO, OTHERS
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Enugu State has been thrown into crisis following a sharp disagreement between party stakeholders and former governor Okwesilieze Nwodo over the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The dispute reportedly stemmed from a meeting held at Nwodo’s residence, where a controversial endorsement was allegedly made in support of the re-election bid of Governor Peter Mba. The move was strongly opposed by leaders of the ADC, who described it as an attempt to undermine and hijack the party’s structure in the state.
In a joint statement signed by chairmen of the party across the 17 local government areas, members of the State Working Committee and zonal leaders, the ADC disowned the endorsement and distanced itself from the actions of Nwodo and his associates.
The stakeholders insisted that those involved in the meeting could not claim to speak for the party unless they had formally resigned from their previous political affiliations and fully aligned with the ADC.
“We reject any attempt by individuals with divided loyalty to determine the future of our party in Enugu State,” the statement read.
The group further challenged Nwodo to clarify his political standing, noting that his continued involvement in ADC affairs without formally declaring membership was causing confusion and internal tension.
Party members from Enugu North, West and East senatorial districts also criticised what they described as an imposed zoning arrangement, arguing that such decisions must follow the party’s internal democratic processes.
The development has heightened anxiety within the party as it prepares for the 2027 polls, with many members calling on the ADC national leadership to intervene and restore unity in the state chapter.
As at the time of filing this report, neither Nwodo nor the ADC national headquarters had issued an official response to the crisis.
The situation reflects the growing political realignments and internal struggles among opposition parties as political actors position themselves for the next general elections.
