Breaking News: Court Nullifies PDP National Convention, Bars Turaki From Parading as National Chairman
A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has nullified the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention held on November 15, 2025, dealing a major blow to the party’s leadership crisis.
The convention, which took place in Ibadan, produced Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as the National Chairman of the PDP after what observers described as a tense and highly controversial process. Delegates from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were in attendance.
However, in its ruling, the court declared the convention invalid and consequently barred Turaki and others elected at the convention from parading themselves as national officers of the PDP.
The court further ruled that the Caretaker Committee led by Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the only recognised National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, pending the conduct of a fresh and valid national convention in line with the party’s constitution and applicable laws.
The November 2025 convention was marred by internal disputes, including sharp disagreements over zoning arrangements, delays in delegate accreditation, and allegations of last-minute manoeuvres by rival factions within the party. These disagreements led to heightened tensions at the venue.
Security was heavily reinforced during the convention as factional groups traded accusations, resulting in brief disruptions before voting eventually commenced.
The court’s decision is expected to further deepen internal debates within the opposition party as stakeholders await clarity on the next steps toward organising a lawful national convention.
