BREAKING: Rivers SSG Benibo Anabraba Resigns from PDP
The Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), Dr. Benibo Anabraba, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dealing another blow to the opposition party in the state.
Anabraba’s resignation was contained in a letter dated January 5, 2026, addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Ward 1 in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State. In the letter, the SSG formally announced his decision to withdraw from the party.
According to him, the decision to leave the PDP was personal. He expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunities it provided him over the years, noting that his time in the PDP contributed significantly to his political growth.
“I wish to formally notify you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). I thank the party for the support and opportunities given to me during my period of membership,” Anabraba stated in the letter.
He, however, did not disclose his next political destination, though there are strong indications that he may be aligning with the All Progressives Congress (APC), amid ongoing political realignments in Rivers State.
Anabraba’s resignation comes at a time of heightened political tension and defections in the state, with several key political figures recently leaving the PDP. Analysts say his exit could further weaken the party’s structure as preparations intensify ahead of future elections.
As of the time of filing this report, the Rivers State chapter of the PDP has yet to issue an official reaction to Anabraba’s resignation.
The development adds to the growing uncertainty within the PDP in Rivers State, as the battle for political control of the oil-rich state continues to intensify.
