Court Remands Kano Electoral Commission Chairman Over Alleged N1bn Fraud
A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Sani Malumfashi, chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), in the sum of N200 million over allegations of N1 billion fraud.
According to The Cable, Malumfashi is standing trial alongside Anas Muhammed Mustapha, secretary of KANSIEC, and Ado Garba, a deputy director in the accounts department of the commission.
Arraignment in Court
The trio was arraigned on Tuesday before Justice James Omotosho, where prosecutors outlined charges bordering on the alleged misappropriation and diversion of public funds amounting to N1 billion.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Bail Conditions
Justice Omotosho granted Malumfashi bail in the sum of N200 million, with two sureties in like sum. The court directed that the sureties must be civil servants of not less than Grade Level 15 or property owners within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), and must present valid documentation to the satisfaction of the court registrar.
The court also ordered that Malumfashi’s international passport be deposited with the court pending the determination of the case.
Other Defendants
Bail conditions were also set for the co-defendants, Mustapha and Garba, under similar terms, as the court emphasized the need to ensure their availability for trial.

Justice Omotosho adjourned the matter to a later date for the commencement of trial, directing the prosecution to ensure the prompt presentation of witnesses and evidence.
