Kajuru Kidnapping Heart-Rending, Alarming – Southern Kaduna Christians
Christian leaders in Southern Kaduna have described the mass abduction of worshippers in Kajuru Local Government Area as heart-rending and deeply alarming, calling for urgent action to secure the release of those still in captivity.
The Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association (SKCLA) strongly condemned the attacks that saw dozens of churchgoers abducted during Sunday services in Kurmin Wali community. The group said the incident has left families devastated and heightened fears across Christian communities in the region.
The kidnappings occurred on January 18, when armed assailants stormed at least three church services, seizing worshippers and taking them into nearby forests. According to local community reports and church officials, more than 160 worshippers were taken, including women and children.
The Arewa Youth Assembly for Good Leadership (AYAGL) also condemned the abductions, describing the attacks on places of worship as “unacceptable” and urging authorities to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities.
Official Response and Conflicting Reports
The Nigeria Police Force initially denied that any mass kidnapping occurred, dismissing the reports as false and urging those spreading them to provide names and evidence.
However, the police later acknowledged that an abduction had taken place and that coordinated security operations were in motion to locate and safely recover the victims.
This reversal drew criticism from several groups, with a security expert warning that politicising such incidents could undermine rescue efforts and endanger victims. He stressed the need for unity and robust security measures rather than public disagreement over what happened.
Broader Security Concerns
The incident has sparked fresh debate about insecurity in parts of Kaduna State, especially in remote rural areas where armed groups have increasingly carried out kidnappings and other violent crimes. Former Senator Shehu Sani highlighted efforts that have protected schools and worship places over the past two years, while acknowledging that gaps remain and demand stronger community protection.
Relatives of abducted victims, rights groups, and community associations continue to urge the federal and state governments to prioritise rescue operations, enhance security presence, and ensure that families are reunited with their loved ones.
