Rivers APC Rejects Impeachment Plot Against Fubara, Warns of Political Instability
The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly rejected moves by the State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the action as “untenable” and capable of plunging the state into avoidable political instability.
The party, in a statement cited by Vanguard News, expressed concern over the unfolding developments at the Assembly, warning that impeachment proceedings at this time would undermine democratic governance and derail the state’s fragile peace.
According to the APC, while the legislature is constitutionally empowered to exercise oversight over the executive, the current attempt to remove the governor and his deputy lacks sufficient justification and appears politically motivated.
The party cautioned lawmakers against allowing internal political disputes to escalate into a full-blown constitutional crisis, stressing that Rivers State cannot afford further tension given its history of political instability.
The APC further urged members of the House of Assembly to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue over confrontation, noting that governance should not be sacrificed on the altar of partisan interests.
“The impeachment of a sitting governor is a serious constitutional matter that should not be trivialised or used as a political weapon,” the party warned, adding that such a move could negatively affect governance and development in the state.
The party called on all political actors and stakeholders in Rivers State to place the interest of the people above personal or factional ambitions and work towards maintaining democratic order.
The impeachment move against Governor Fubara has continued to generate reactions across political divides, with growing calls for calm and adherence to constitutional processes as tensions simmer in the state.
