Seven Feared Killed as Terrorists Attack Wawa Community in Niger State
At least seven people are feared dead after suspected terrorists stormed Wawa community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, leaving residents in shock and fuelling fresh fears over the worsening insecurity in the north-central region.
The attack, which occurred late on Thursday, saw assailants believed to be armed groups enter the agrarian community and open fire on villagers. Among the victims is reported to be a staff member of the Kainji Lake National Park, whose body had not been recovered at the time of reporting.
Bodies Recovered, Community in Mourning
Security personnel and community members later discovered six corpses in bushes near Wawa, which were taken to the Basic Health Centre (BHC) in the area. Residents described the scene as devastating and traumatic, saying the violence has heightened fear among locals who already live with persistent insecurity.
Local leaders warned that the attack could deepen anxiety in Borgu Emirate, where many villagers now fear leaving their homes for farms or markets. “People are afraid to go about their daily lives,” one resident said, urging authorities to intervene swiftly.
Violence Erupts After Earlier Confrontation
According to sources, the crisis began after a youth from the community was attacked while working on his farm, prompting a group of local youths to mobilise and track those responsible. Some returned safely, but others went missing, and the situation later worsened when the bodies were found.
The Niger State Police Command has not issued an official statement on the fatalities yet, but residents have urged calm and warned against spreading unverified claims that could further inflame tensions.
Context of Growing Insecurity
The attack comes amid a broader escalation of terrorist and bandit activity across Nigeria’s northern regions, where militant groups have repeatedly targeted rural communities, security forces, and travellers. Recent incidents in neighbouring areas of Niger State have caused residents to flee their homes over fear of further violence.
Security analysts warn that such attacks — which sometimes involve kidnapping, raids on farms, and other violent tactics — are not only a humanitarian crisis but also a threat to agriculture and local economies in affected states.

Federal and state security agencies have in recent weeks intensified operations against suspected terrorist enclaves and bandit hideouts, deploying military and intelligence assets in affected areas. However, communities like Wawa say they still lack sufficient protection to deter future attacks.
