Wike-Backed Oyo PDP Urges Turaki Faction to Seek Reconciliation After Court Ruling
A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called on the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) to embrace reconciliation following the court ruling that nullified the party’s national convention held in the state on November 15, 2025.
According to The Cable, the appeal was made by Abdulrahman Akinoso, chairman of the PDP caretaker committee in Oyo, while reacting to the judgment of the Federal High Court in Ibadan.
Call for Unity
Akinoso said the court’s decision should serve as an opportunity for the party to heal internal divisions and rebuild trust among its various factions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“This is a time for reconciliation, not further confrontation. The strength of the PDP lies in its unity and ability to resolve disputes internally,” he said.
Background to the Dispute
The Federal High Court recently nullified the national convention that produced the Turaki-led NWC, ruling that the process did not comply with the party’s constitution and legal requirements. The court also affirmed the caretaker committee led by Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the only recognised national leadership pending the conduct of a fresh convention.
In response, the Turaki-led faction has filed an appeal, insisting that the convention was valid and that the judgment should be overturned.
Akinoso’s Position
Reacting to the appeal, Akinoso urged party leaders at the national level to prioritise dialogue over litigation, warning that prolonged legal battles could weaken the PDP’s organisational structure and electoral prospects.
He said the Oyo PDP caretaker committee remains committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and inclusive process toward a new, legally compliant national convention.
Political Implications
Analysts say the call for reconciliation reflects growing concern within the party over the impact of internal disputes on its standing as a major opposition force. The PDP has faced a series of leadership crises in recent months, with rival factions vying for control of its national structure.
