Education Storm: ASUU Rejects FG’s UK Varsity Campus Plan, Vows Resistance
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has strongly opposed plans by the Federal Government of Nigeria to establish a campus of a United Kingdom university in the country, describing the move as misplaced priority.
ASUU leaders argued that instead of inviting foreign institutions, the government should focus on revitalising Nigeria’s public universities, many of which are grappling with inadequate funding, poor infrastructure and staff welfare challenges.
The union warned that it would resist the initiative, insisting that such policies could undermine local institutions and further weaken the nation’s education system.
According to ASUU, allowing foreign universities to operate campuses in Nigeria may create inequality within the education sector and divert attention from necessary reforms.
Education analysts say the development has reignited debates over government priorities, funding gaps, and the long-standing issues affecting Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
While proponents of the plan argue it could boost global standards and attract investment, critics maintain that strengthening domestic universities should remain the top priority.
Observers note that the standoff could lead to further tensions between ASUU and the government if no compromise is reached.
