OYSIEC Notifies INEC of Dec 29 LG Poll, Seeks Support as INEC Urges Fairness
The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission has formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission of its planned December 29, 2026 local government elections, while seeking collaboration to ensure a credible process.
Speaking during a visit to the INEC headquarters in Ibadan, OYSIEC Chairman, Dr. Afees Adeniyi, said the engagement was necessary to officially communicate the revised election date and request institutional support for a smooth exercise.
He emphasised the need for synergy between both electoral bodies to strengthen transparency, efficiency and credibility in the conduct of the polls across the state.
The December 29 date was earlier fixed following adjustments to the national electoral timetable by INEC, which created a clash with the initially proposed schedule.
Adeniyi reiterated the commission’s commitment to conducting a free, fair and inclusive election, noting that preparations are already underway.
Meanwhile, the INEC leadership stressed the importance of fairness and adherence to electoral guidelines, urging OYSIEC to ensure a level playing field for all political parties participating in the exercise.
Observers say the collaboration between both bodies will be crucial in boosting public confidence and reducing voter apathy, which has historically affected local government elections in Nigeria.
The upcoming poll is expected to take place across all 33 local government areas in Oyo State, as political activities gradually gather momentum.
