2027: My Last Presidential Bid — Atiku Signals Final Run, Sparks Fresh Debate
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that the 2027 presidential election will be his final attempt at Nigeria’s highest office, setting the stage for renewed political conversations across the country.
Speaking during an appearance on Prime Time on Arise Television, Atiku—who will be 80 years old by 2027—stated unequivocally that the next election cycle would mark the end of his long-standing presidential ambitions, which date back to 1992.
Addressing concerns about his age and multiple past attempts, the former vice president argued that Nigeria’s central challenge remains a leadership deficit rather than generational limitations. He maintained that his extensive experience, including his time as Vice President and as a former military governor, positions him as a more capable leader when compared to the incumbent, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Atiku further contended that governance struggles at the state level are often linked to a lack of guidance and experience at the federal level. According to him, several states led by younger governors have underperformed due to insufficient leadership direction from the top.
He also referenced the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, suggesting that inexperience played a role in some of the challenges faced during that period.
Despite his criticism of leadership gaps, Atiku emphasized the importance of grooming a new generation of leaders, advocating for structured leadership training for young Nigerians as a necessary step toward national development.
