Oyo 2027 Politics: Makinde Cites 12-Year Muslim Senate Dominance to Calm Successor Agitators
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has directly addressed the intensifying agitation for a Muslim successor, leveraging over a decade of senatorial data to call for religious harmony and political patience. Speaking at the 2024 Hijrah 1446 celebration in Ibadan, the Governor broke his silence on the 2027 succession debate, which has seen various groups demand that the next occupant of Agodi Government House be of the Islamic faith.
In a strategic move to de-escalate sectarian tensions, Governor Makinde pointed to a 12-year trend of Muslim dominance in the state's senatorial representation as evidence of the Christian community’s tolerance and the state’s existing balance. He noted that currently, all three senators representing Oyo State in the National Assembly—Senators Sharafadeen Alli, Yunus Akintunde, and Fatai Buhari—are Muslims.
The Governor further illustrated that this was not an isolated occurrence. He reminded the audience that in the previous two dispensations, the state’s senatorial seats were also held exclusively by Muslims, including figures such as Kola Balogun, Teslim Folarin, Rilwan Soji Akanbi, and Monsurat Sunmonu. Makinde emphasized that despite this statistical reality, the Christian community did not allow it to become a source of friction, urging agitators to adopt a similar spirit of unity.
"I want us to pray, as the heart of kings and rulers are in God’s hands," Makinde stated, shifting the focus from religious entitlement to divine guidance. He challenged the people of Oyo State to look beyond sentiments and instead pray for a leader capable of sustaining the developmental strides of the current administration.
The Governor’s remarks come amid high-stakes maneuvering within the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), where prominent figures like Oloye Adebayo Adelabu and Senator Teslim Folarin are already locked in a rivalry for the party's 2027 ticket. By highlighting these statistics, Makinde appears to be framing the 2027 race as a matter of competence and continuity rather than a religious "turn-by-turn" arrangement.
