Power Push: Nigeria Hits 4,300MW in Two Weeks Despite Grid Challenges — Adebayo Adelabu
Nigeria’s electricity generation rose above 4,300 megawatts within a 14-day period, despite persistent grid challenges, according to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.
Adelabu defended his earlier assurance of improved power supply within two weeks, noting that the sector recorded steady growth in output even amid nationwide outages.
Figures spanning March 28 to April 10, 2026, indicate that generation increased from approximately 3,951MW to over 4,300MW. The ministry credited this improvement to enhanced gas supply to power plants and better coordination across the power value chain.
Gas supply to thermal power stations reportedly climbed from about 605 million standard cubic feet per day to over 704 mmscfd during the period. Key operational metrics also showed gains, with mechanical availability exceeding 7,796MW and usable capacity rising from roughly 4,208MW to nearly 4,694MW—pointing to improved efficiency.
The minister said the upward trend signals gradual recovery driven by reforms in the gas-to-power sector. He also revealed the establishment of a monitoring committee tasked with identifying bottlenecks, strengthening coordination, and ensuring consistent gas supply to generation companies.
While acknowledging ongoing challenges, Adelabu maintained that the sector is making measurable progress, with expectations of further improvements in the weeks ahead as reforms continue to take effect.
