When President Bola Tinubu removed Dr. Maryam Shetty's name from the list of ministry nominees, she insisted she bore no ill will towards anyone.
According to Vanguard, she feels validated by the nomination, which she sees as proof that the government is committed to promoting young women to even the most traditional roles.
Kano State Shetty made the announcement yesterday in a statement that she had been replaced by Dr. Mariya Mahmoud.
As of this writing, there has been no replacement from Kano with the same name.
However, Shetty insists that this is not a failure in her book. "I found myself at the centre of a pivotal moment in the Nigerian political landscape," she said. It was a tremendous privilege to be considered for a cabinet position by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This was a big step forward for more diversified representation at the national level, given they came from more conservative communities in northern Nigeria.
I'm at a loss for words to describe how proud and happy I felt after our meeting. As well as being a vote of confidence in my skills and my ability to see a future in which young women like me, even from the most traditional regions of Nigeria, may be in positions of influence and power, it demonstrated that our great nation is ready to accept such a future.
Regrettably, events outside of my control led to him giving up on my effort. Being a devout Muslim shaped my perspective, which may come out as a drawback to some. I interpreted it as Allah's will, and I believe He bestows power whenever and however He sees fit. His plans always work out even when ours don't.
