Breaking News: Tinubu Set to Reinstate Fubara, Bars Him from Seeking Re-Election — Wike to Control LGs in Rivers Peace Deal
President Bola Tinubu has reached a deal to reinstate Siminalayi Fubara as Governor of Rivers State—on the condition that Fubara will not seek re-election in 2027.
The agreement was sealed during a closed-door meeting on Thursday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, attended by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Governor Fubara, suspended Speaker Martins Amaewhule, and several Rivers State lawmakers.
Lagos Reporters gathered that the truce is part of a broader peace framework aimed at restoring political stability in the crisis-ridden state. According to presidency insiders, Fubara is to complete his current four-year term without interference but must abandon any ambition for a second term.
“The arrangement is clear: no second term, no local government control, and peace will return,” a top presidency source confirmed.
As part of the agreement, political control at the grassroots level will return to Wike’s camp. The FCT Minister is expected to handpick all local government chairpersons across Rivers State’s 23 LGAs, effectively giving him dominance over the state’s political machinery.
Furthermore, Governor Fubara has agreed to clear all outstanding entitlements owed to the 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike, who were earlier suspended. In return, the lawmakers will abandon any impeachment threats against him.
“The president made it clear that Rivers cannot afford a prolonged crisis. The deal is about restoring calm, but it comes at a steep cost for Fubara,” another source involved in the negotiation said.
While the truce may bring temporary peace, political analysts warn that the underlying tensions remain unresolved—and may resurface as 2027 approaches.
