Breaking News: Tinubu Renames UNIMAID to Muhammadu Buhari University, Pays Emotional Tribute to Late Ex-President

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of the late former president who died on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82.

The renaming was announced on Thursday, July 17, during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held in Abuja to commemorate Buhari’s life and legacy.

Late President Buhari passed away in a London hospital and was laid to rest in his Daura residence on Tuesday, July 15. The funeral was attended by family, friends, political associates, and dignitaries from across the country.

Presiding over the solemn council meeting, President Tinubu delivered a moving eulogy, describing Buhari as “a good, decent, and honourable man.” He acknowledged that while no leader is perfect, Buhari’s life was defined by “discipline, moral fortitude, and unwavering patriotism.”

“Buhari stood always ramrod unmoved by the temptation of power, unseduced by applause, and unafraid of the loneliness that sometimes comes to those who do what is right rather than popular,” Tinubu said, as the chamber of ministers and aides listened in reflective silence.

The President commended Buhari’s legacy of incorruptibility, justice, and austere leadership, stating that his moral tone in governance set a standard that must endure.

Recalling their political alliance that culminated in Nigeria’s first peaceful transfer of power in 2015, Tinubu highlighted Buhari’s humility and restraint in office, saying he “bore the burdens of leadership without complaint.”

While admitting that every legacy faces scrutiny, Tinubu insisted that Buhari’s integrity should serve as a benchmark for future generations.

With the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, President Tinubu said the nation has taken a step to eternally honour “a patriot whose righteousness never sought applause, but whose quiet courage shaped a generation.”
