Breaking News: Lagos Govt Seals Popular Lagos Island Building Over Discharge of Faeces Into Public Drainage

The Lagos State Government has sealed off a popular building in the Lagos Island area for discharging faeces directly into public drainage channels, a practice officials say poses serious risks to public health and the environment.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement on his X handle, stressing that the action was part of the state’s commitment to ensuring a safer and cleaner Lagos.

According to him, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Thursday, August 27, 2025, sealed off Pa Kasumu Adepeju Olaniyonu House, located at 22 Apongbon Street, Lagos Island, after discovering the deliberate discharge of human waste into drains.

“This act amounts to public nuisance, environmental pollution, and endangers human life. Lagosians are enjoined to embrace proper wastewater management and hygiene practices to enhance public health and environmental sustainability,” Wahab stated.

The development has sparked public debate on the need for stricter enforcement of sanitation laws, particularly in densely populated areas of Lagos Island.
