ASUU Suspends Two-Week Warning Strike After Fresh Talks With FG — Gives One-Month Ultimatum to Resolve Outstanding Issues
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike following renewed negotiations with the Federal Government over unresolved issues affecting Nigeria’s public universities.
The decision was announced by ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to Piwuna, the suspension came after a series of meetings between ASUU leaders and a government delegation headed by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, with additional interventions from the National Assembly.
ASUU had embarked on the warning strike on October 13, 2025, to protest the Federal Government’s delay in concluding the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and to demand improvements in the welfare of lecturers and the state of university infrastructure.
During the industrial action, the Federal Government re-engaged the union in discussions held on October 16 and 18, leading to what ASUU described as “notable progress” compared to the situation before the strike.
“The National Executive Council met between October 21 and 22 to review developments and agreed that the strike had achieved its purpose by bringing the government back to the negotiation table,” Piwuna stated.
He added that while not all of ASUU’s demands have been met, the union decided to suspend the strike to give room for dialogue to continue in a peaceful atmosphere.
However, the ASUU President warned that the union would not hesitate to resume the strike if the government fails to act within one month.
“Government must use this one-month window to address all outstanding issues, otherwise, we will be left with no option than to resume industrial action without further notice,” he warned.
The latest truce offers a temporary relief to students and parents across the country, as academic activities are expected to resume immediately in public universities.
