Makinde Defies Opposition, Crowns 14 Oyo Chiefs as Obas in Historic Ceremony
In a significant move that has stirred conversations within traditional circles, Governor Seyi Makinde has elevated the Alago-oja and 13 other high chiefs and Baales in Oyo town to the status of crown-wearing Obas.
The historic coronation ceremony was held on Friday, February 13, at Oliveth Baptist High School, Oyo, where the newly elevated monarchs were formally presented with their instruments of office.
Representing the governor at the event, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Adebayo Lawal, described the elevation as a bold affirmation of the administration’s commitment to strengthening traditional institutions and deepening grassroots development.
He congratulated the new Obas, noting that their ascension recognizes their leadership roles and reinforces the continued relevance of traditional institutions in governance, peacebuilding and community advancement.
According to him, the state government holds traditional rulers in high esteem as custodians of culture, promoters of unity and critical partners in progress. He charged the monarchs to lead with integrity, fairness and dedication, urging them to ensure their reigns foster peace, inclusiveness and support for government programmes aimed at improving citizens’ welfare.
Lawal further emphasized that sustained collaboration between the government and traditional authorities remains crucial in addressing security challenges, strengthening unity and accelerating development at the grassroots.
