Resident Doctors Announce Indefinite Nationwide Strike from November 1 over Unmet Demands
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced that its members will embark on an indefinite nationwide strike beginning November 1, 2025, following the Federal Government’s failure to meet their longstanding demands.
This was disclosed in a statement released on Sunday by the association’s president, Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, after an emergency meeting of NARD’s National Executive Council (NEC) held on Saturday.
According to the statement, the decision to down tools comes after the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum earlier issued to the Federal Government to address critical issues affecting doctors across the country.
“Today, after a five-hour Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting, the members of NEC have issued new marching orders,” the statement read.
“The NEC has unanimously directed all resident doctors to embark on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action effective from 11:59 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2025.”
Dr. Suleiman explained that the council reviewed the government’s response to its previous demands and concluded that the inaction and neglect could no longer be tolerated.
He added that the NEC had outlined minimum demands, strike monitoring directives, and adopted the ‘no work, no pay / no pay, no work’ principle to guide the industrial action.
The association had in recent months raised concerns over several unresolved issues, including unpaid salary arrears, poor working conditions, inadequate manpower, and the need for improved welfare and training for resident doctors across federal and state hospitals.
The statement urged members to remain united and resolute as the strike commences, while calling on the Federal Government to take immediate and concrete steps toward fulfilling its commitments to the health sector.
