NIGHT OF TERROR IN IBADAN: GAS TANKER EXPLOSION AT BIOKU-ALAADUN LEAVES MANY FEARED DEAD
A devastating gas explosion on Friday night sent shockwaves through the Bioku-Alaadun community in Ibadan, leaving many feared dead and scores injured in an incident that residents say shook the entire neighbourhood.
The explosion reportedly occurred while a gas-laden tanker was discharging at a retail gas point in the area. What began as a routine operation quickly turned into a deadly inferno, with eyewitnesses describing a sudden blast followed by flames that engulfed nearby buildings.
Residents recounted hearing a loud bang that shattered windows and sent people running into the streets in confusion. Thick plumes of black smoke rose over the community as fire spread rapidly before emergency teams arrived.
The Oyo State Fire Services Agency confirmed that casualty figures were still being compiled at press time. The General Manager of the agency, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, said operatives were deployed immediately to contain the fire and rescue victims. He added that the extent of the destruction could not yet be fully ascertained.
Early, unconfirmed reports suggest that the owner of the gas shop may be among the victims killed in the explosion.
As firefighters battled the blaze, frantic relatives gathered around the scene and nearby hospitals, searching for missing loved ones. Several houses and business premises close to the gas point were also damaged.
Authorities have cordoned off the area while investigations begin into the cause of the explosion. Residents are calling for stricter regulation of gas distribution outlets, especially those operating within densely populated neighbourhoods.
