PDP Convention: Aborisade Urges Delegates to Uphold Unity, Fairness as Party Converges on Ibadan
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barrister Chief Niyi Aborisade, has called on party leaders and delegates to demonstrate restraint, discipline and a strong commitment to unity as the party proceeds with its national convention scheduled for Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Aborisade, in a statement issued on Friday, said the convention is coming at a highly sensitive time for the PDP, especially as internal disagreements, court cases and differing positions among key stakeholders continue to generate tension within the party. He stressed that the gathering should not be treated as a routine political exercise but as a critical juncture that will define the party’s internal cohesion and future relevance.
He noted that the convention represents a major test of the PDP’s willingness to uphold the democratic principles it preaches, particularly in the areas of fairness, openness and respect for due process. According to him, members at all levels national, state and ward must be prepared to look beyond personal ambitions and narrow political calculations.
Aborisade emphasised that the conduct and decisions taken at the Ibadan convention will significantly influence how Nigerians perceive the party in the months ahead. He explained that the public is closely watching how the PDP manages its internal conflicts, resolves grievances and positions itself as a credible alternative in the country’s political landscape.
He maintained that the party’s ongoing challenges should not weaken its structure but instead offer an opportunity for genuine reconciliation, renewal of trust and the strengthening of internal systems. He argued that the PDP must use the convention to rebuild confidence among its loyalists and reassure Nigerians of its capacity to offer stable leadership.
Aborisade expressed hope that the convention would serve as a unifying moment for the party, rather than an event that widens existing divisions or triggers further controversy. He urged party elders, national executives, youth leaders and delegates to approach the gathering with calmness, responsibility and a clear focus on the party’s long term survival.
Delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are expected in Ibadan for the two day convention, which will feature deliberations on party leadership, internal reforms and strategic repositioning ahead of future elections.
