Traffic Disruption as Gas Tanker Overturns at Chisco Axis, LASTMA Begins Recovery Operation
Traffic came to a standstill on Monday morning along the Chisco axis inward Victoria Island after a gas tanker overturned, forcing emergency teams to divert vehicles and launch a recovery operation.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), working alongside other emergency responders, swiftly moved to the scene to contain the situation and ensure public safety.
According to reports, the accident occurred near the traffic light at the Chisco axis, causing heavy congestion for motorists heading towards Victoria Island.
In an official statement, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, said the operation would involve a temporary closure of the affected carriageway to facilitate a safe and efficient recovery.
“Motorists are strongly advised to exercise patience and cooperate with LASTMA officials and other emergency responders on the ground,” he stated, assuring that every effort was being made to complete the evacuation within the shortest possible time and restore normal traffic flow.
He further emphasized that the safety of all road users remains a top priority of the Lagos State Government and that updates would be provided once the tanker is successfully cleared.
Meanwhile, frustrated motorists and commuters lamented the gridlock caused by the incident. A driver, identified as Jane Kenneth, told The Nation that she had been stuck in traffic since 8 a.m., while several pedestrians were seen trekking long distances to reach their destinations.
