Defence Headquarters Orders Immediate Removal of Non-Essential Military Roadblocks Nationwide
The Defence Headquarters has ordered the immediate dismantling of all non-essential static military roadblocks and checkpoints across the country, in a major overhaul of national security operations.
According to the announcement by the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, the decision aims to enhance national security, ease the movement of people and goods, and reduce unnecessary delays and harassment often associated with military checkpoints.
Under the new directive, police officers and personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps will take over checkpoint responsibilities, enabling soldiers to redirect their focus to frontline operations in the fight against terrorists, bandits, and other armed threats in remote areas.
Security analysts say the move will likely improve coordination between security agencies, strengthen internal security, and boost public confidence, especially for commuters who frequently encounter multiple checkpoints on major highways.
The Defence Headquarters noted that essential and intelligence based checkpoints will remain in strategic locations, while non essential ones are to be removed with immediate effect.
