Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, Dies in Saudi Arabia
Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (retd.), has died in a hospital in Saudi Arabia. A close source confirmed his passing to SaharaReporters on Tuesday morning.
The death of the former head of Nigeria’s judiciary was also officially announced by the Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS), National Headquarters, Abuja, in a condolence statement describing the loss as “monumental” to the Nigerian judiciary, the legal profession, the Muslim Ummah, and the nation at large.
Justice Muhammad, who served as Nigeria’s Chief Justice until his retirement, was widely regarded as a jurist of integrity, humility, and deep commitment to justice. NAMLAS paid glowing tribute to his role as a mentor to young Muslim law students, referring to him as a “fatherly pillar” whose guidance and support helped shape future generations of legal practitioners.
The association noted that during his tenure as Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Muhammad carried out his duties with wisdom, restraint, and a strong sense of responsibility, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to influence the legal profession.
NAMLAS also offered prayers for the repose of his soul, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Jannatul Firdaus.
Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad’s judicial career spanned several decades, during which he emerged as one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s legal history, contributing significantly to the development and stability of the nation’s judiciary.
