KWAM 1 Declares Interest in Awujale of Ijebuland Stool
Fuji icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1 or K1 De Ultimate, has formally declared his interest in succeeding the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona as the next Awujale of Ijebuland.
Ayinde made his intention known in a letter addressed to the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, the family currently responsible for producing the next Awujale. In the letter, dated December 3, 2025, the renowned musician stated that he is a bona fide son of the Fusengbuwa lineage.
“I was born on March 3, 1957, and I am a bona fide son of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House of Agunsebi Quarters, tracing my ancestry to the Oba Jadiara lineage, which qualifies me to present myself for consideration in accordance with established tradition,” he wrote.
The 68-year-old musician highlighted his over five decades of contributions to the promotion of Ijebu, Yoruba and Nigerian culture through music and cultural enterprise. He also referenced several traditional and national honours conferred on him, including his installation as the Mayegun of Yorubaland in 2020, his national honour as a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), and additional chieftaincy titles bestowed upon him by the late Awujale.
Confirming receipt of the letter, the chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Prince Abdul Lateef Adebayo Owoyemi, assured family members and the public that the selection process would follow due tradition and would be concluded within the stipulated timeframe.
The Awujale stool became vacant following the passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona on July 13, 2025, after a celebrated 65-year reign. The ruling house had earlier announced that the selection of a new Awujale would be completed within weeks.
Ayinde’s declaration adds a new dimension to what is expected to be a closely watched selection process, with multiple claimants from the Fusengbuwa lineage expressing interest in ascending the revered throne.
