Osun Governorship: PDP Faction Proceeds With Primary in Osogbo Despite Adeleke’s Exit
A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State on Tuesday went ahead with its governorship primary in Osogbo, despite Governor Ademola Adeleke’s resignation from the party and an earlier announcement postponing the exercise.
The primary took place at the Adolak Events Centre, Osogbo, where delegates and officials gathered under tight security to elect the party’s flagbearer for the 2026 governorship election.
This development comes barely hours after a letter dated November 4, 2025—signed by Governor Adeleke—surfaced online, confirming his exit from the PDP over the ongoing leadership crisis at the national level.
The Osun PDP chairman, Sunday Bisi, had on Monday announced that the primary would no longer hold as scheduled, citing uncertainty caused by the suspension and counter-suspension of key national officers responsible for managing primaries and submitting candidates’ lists to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He warned that the crisis could hinder Adeleke’s chances of pursuing the PDP ticket unless INEC-recognised resolutions were reached swiftly.
Despite the turmoil, a faction of the party’s national leadership insisted the primary must hold. The PDP national secretariat, in a letter signed by the National Organising Secretary, Theophilus Shan, dated December 1, 2025, reaffirmed its earlier schedule.
The letter read in part:
“Sequel to the earlier notice of 28th October 2025 on the gubernatorial primaries and the successful completion of congresses to elect ad-hoc and national delegates in Osun State on the 24th and 29th of November 2025, the Party hereby reminds stakeholders and the general public that the primaries to elect the gubernatorial candidate will hold on December 2, 2025 at Atlantis Multipurpose Hall, Ring Road, Osogbo, Osun State, 10am.”
It further stated that the Electoral Committee had been duly constituted to supervise the exercise, warning candidates to adhere strictly to party rules, as acts of indiscipline would be sanctioned.
As of the time of filing this report, officials and delegates of the PDP were proceeding with the primary, despite the uncertainty caused by Adeleke’s resignation and the internal crisis rocking the party’s national leadership.
