Three Killed as Gunmen Invade Traditional Marriage Ceremony in Lafia
At least three persons were killed on Tuesday night when unidentified gunmen invaded a traditional marriage ceremony in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
The attack occurred in the Akunza area of Ashige, a Migili-speaking community in Lafia Local Government Area, while guests were gathered to celebrate the marriage rites. Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the venue and opened fire, sending guests scampering for safety.
Sources from the community disclosed that three people died on the spot, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The injured victims were said to have been rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed the incident, noting that security operatives have been deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further attacks. The police said investigations had commenced to apprehend the perpetrators and unravel the motive behind the assault.
Reacting to the incident, the Migili Youth Association condemned the attack, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable. The group called on the state and federal governments to intensify security measures in rural communities to protect lives and property.
As of the time of filing this report, no arrest had been made, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident has heightened fear among residents and adds to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Nasarawa State, where armed attacks on communities and social gatherings have been reported in recent times.
