Eno Flags-Off Construction of CNG Terminal in Akwa Ibom
Governor Umo Bassey Eno has formally flagged off the construction of the Ibom Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Mass Transit Terminal at Ikot Ekpe Offot in Uyo, a major step in the state’s push to modernise transportation infrastructure and promote cleaner energy use.
The ceremony, held on Saturday at the project site, was marked by Governor Eno’s declaration that the state is committed to transforming its mass transit landscape and easing movement for residents while boosting economic activities.
Transforming Public Transport
Governor Eno announced that 50 CNG-powered buses have been ordered through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and are expected to arrive by April 2026. Once delivered, the buses will be deployed across all 31 local government areas in the state, offering commuters a more affordable and environmentally friendly means of travel.
“The vision of this administration is to provide world-class transport facilities that will ease movement, grow the state’s economy, and enhance tourism,” Eno said, underscoring the benefits of the initiative for both residents and visitors.
Features and Goals of the CNG Terminal
The new terminal — part of a broader strategy to improve mobility — will include modern infrastructure to support efficient operations. Beyond serving as a mass transit hub, it will incorporate a CNG filling station, technical training facilities for technicians, and employment opportunities for drivers and support staff, contributing to local skill development and job creation.
Officials at the event highlighted that the terminal project is designed to cut transportation costs for commuters, reduce reliance on petrol-powered vehicles, and integrate cleaner energy solutions into everyday transit in Akwa Ibom.
