Senator Godiya Akwashiki Dies at 52 in India
Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has died at the age of 52.
A family source confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Akwashiki passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, while undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in India after a prolonged illness.
The source described his death as a huge loss to Nasarawa State and the nation at large, highlighting his commitment to grassroots development and people-oriented leadership. According to the family, Akwashiki was widely regarded as one of the most impactful senators from Nasarawa North, with several empowerment programmes and constituency projects spread across the zone.
“Senator Akwashiki was the best senator Nasarawa North ever produced because of his purposeful leadership. His projects are visible across the constituency, and he remains the only senator from the zone to have secured a second term,” the source said.
Akwashiki was first elected into the Nigerian Senate in 2019 and was re-elected for a second term, a feat described by many political observers as unprecedented in the district’s history.
Before his emergence as a senator, he had a distinguished career in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he served as Majority Leader and later as Deputy Speaker.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Akwashiki was known for his influence in state and national politics, as well as his focus on infrastructure, education, and youth empowerment.
His death has created a significant vacuum in the political and developmental landscape of Nasarawa North, with tributes continuing to pour in from colleagues, constituents, and political stakeholders across the country.
