Uncertainty Over Kano Gov’s Planned APC Defection as Kwankwaso Camp Mounts Pressure
Political tension has continued to build in Kano State following growing uncertainty over the reported plan by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as loyalists of NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, intensify pressure to halt the move.
Reports by Daily Post and other national newspapers indicate that the anticipated defection, earlier speculated to take place this month, has yet to materialise, fuelling speculation and deepening divisions within the NNPP and the influential Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Supporters of Kwankwaso have openly expressed opposition to the governor’s reported plan, warning that a switch to the APC could undermine the party’s structure in the state and betray the confidence of voters who rallied behind the NNPP in the last general elections.
Speaking recently to supporters, Kwankwaso was quoted as saying that he had not ruled out engagement with the APC but insisted that any political realignment must be guided by clear, written guarantees that would protect the interests of Kano State, the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya political base.
On the APC side, party chieftains in Kano have played down claims that the governor’s defection is imminent, noting that consultations are still ongoing. Political sources say negotiations have been complicated by reported demands, including assurances over political positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Amid the uncertainty, security has reportedly been tightened around the Kano State Government House, with operatives of the Nigeria Police and other security agencies deployed to forestall any breakdown of law and order as political tensions rise.
Political analysts say the unfolding situation underscores the strategic importance of Kano in Nigeria’s political landscape, with both the APC and NNPP keen to consolidate their influence in one of the country’s most populous and electorally significant states.
Within the NNPP, party leaders have urged calm, stressing the need for internal dialogue to preserve unity and prevent a possible split that could weaken the party’s grassroots support base.
As discussions continue behind closed doors, the political future of Governor Yusuf and the direction of the Kwankwasiyya Movement remain key issues shaping the evolving political dynamics in Kano State.
