2027: ADC Raises Alarm Over Arrests, Campaign Restrictions

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over what it described as growing challenges confronting opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party alleged that recent arrests of opposition figures, restrictions on campaign activities and other electoral setbacks could undermine democratic competition in the country.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ADC said the developments pose a threat to the credibility of the electoral process if not urgently addressed.

“The pattern of arrests and campaign restrictions targeting opposition voices is a dangerous signal as we approach 2027. Democracy thrives on fairness and equal opportunity,” the party stated.

The ADC called on relevant authorities, including security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to ensure a level playing field for all political actors.

According to the party, free political engagement and equal access to campaign platforms are essential to sustaining Nigeria’s democratic progress.

However, government officials have repeatedly denied claims of targeting opposition politicians, insisting that arrests and investigations are carried out strictly in accordance with the law.

Political analysts say early positioning ahead of the 2027 elections has intensified political tensions, with parties already strategizing and forming alliances.

The ADC urged stakeholders to safeguard democratic institutions and prevent actions that could erode public confidence in the electoral system.
