Nnamdi Kanu: Reactions Trail Monarch’s Call for His Release
Reactions have continued to trail a recent call by a traditional ruler for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The monarch, during a public engagement over the weekend, appealed to the federal government to consider granting Kanu freedom in the interest of peace and reconciliation in the South-East region.
The call has since sparked mixed responses from political leaders, civil society groups and concerned Nigerians.
Some stakeholders described the monarch’s appeal as a move towards dialogue and conflict resolution, arguing that Kanu’s release could ease tensions in parts of the region.
“There is a need for political solution and reconciliation. Continued detention may not bring the desired peace,” a South-East socio-political group stated.
However, others insisted that the matter remains a legal issue currently before the courts and should not be influenced by political or traditional pressure.
A government official, who declined to be named, maintained that the rule of law must take its course.
Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) while facing charges bordering on terrorism and other related offences. His trial has witnessed several legal twists, including court rulings and appeals.
The renewed debate comes amid ongoing calls from various groups for either a political solution or strict adherence to judicial processes.
As of the time of filing this report, the federal government has not issued an official response to the monarch’s latest appeal.
