Appeal Court Affirms Natasha’s Suspension, Says Senate Acted Within the Law
The Court of Appeal has affirmed the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Senate, ruling that the upper legislative chamber acted within the confines of the law.
In its judgment delivered on Tuesday, the appellate court dismissed the appeal challenging the senator’s suspension, holding that the Senate possesses the constitutional authority to regulate its internal affairs, including the discipline of its members.
The court noted that the decision to suspend Akpoti-Uduaghan followed due legislative procedure and did not violate her fundamental rights as claimed.
According to the court, the National Assembly, as an independent arm of government, has the powers to enforce its rules to maintain order and discipline among lawmakers.
“The Senate acted within its powers as provided by the Constitution and its standing rules,” the court held.
Natasha, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, was suspended following allegations of misconduct, a move that generated widespread debate and criticism from sections of the public and civil society groups.
Her supporters had argued that the suspension was politically motivated and excessive, while the Senate maintained that it was necessary to preserve institutional integrity.
The Appeal Court ruling is seen as a major legal victory for the Senate leadership, reinforcing the legislature’s authority to manage its internal processes without undue interference.
As of the time of filing this report, Akpoti-Uduaghan is yet to issue an official reaction to the judgment.
