Alleged Impeachment Plot: Oyo Lawmaker Denies Involvement, Backs Makinde
Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, has dismissed claims of an alleged plot to impeach Governor Seyi Makinde, declaring his unwavering loyalty to the state government.
In a public statement issued after a meeting of lawmakers held at the Governor’s House, Oyekola said the Assembly had uncovered efforts by “agents of disunity” seeking to create friction between the legislature and the executive arm of government.
According to him, deliberations at the meeting revealed that the Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin, had been approached in separate instances over his alleged governorship ambition.
Oyekola disclosed that Ogundoyin was reportedly invited by the Olubadan of Ibadanland after earlier seeking the monarch’s support. During the meeting, the Speaker was said to have been advised to consider contesting for a seat in the House of Representatives under the All Progressives Congress (APC), with promises of financial backing. The Speaker, however, reportedly declined the offer.
He further stated that Ogundoyin was also invited by former Oyo State First Lady, Florence Ajimobi, on a similar matter, where he was allegedly offered financial inducement, which he again rejected.
Oyekola distanced himself from the alleged moves, insisting he was neither consulted nor involved in any discussions or arrangements that could destabilize the state.
“I completely disassociate myself from any activity capable of disrupting the peace of Oyo State. I was not invited, consulted, or part of such engagements,” he said.
Reaffirming his allegiance, the lawmaker pledged continued support for Governor Makinde, emphasizing his commitment to the unity, peace, and progress of the state.
The statement comes amid growing political tensions and speculations over succession politics ahead of the 2027 elections in Oyo State.
